Modest Proposal to Camille Paglia (blogging news)

... Paglia was absent from Salon for a while due to the demands of working on her recent best-seller, Break, Blow, Burn, where she presented selected poetry along with commentary.

Imagine.

A book of poetry criticism a best seller!

I suggest that Paglia consider a sequel to her best seller that would focus exclusively on my unpublished body of work, to be titled "Break, Blow, Burn - A New Hope." My oeuvre, which might be classified pre-apocalyptic media ecology, merges the sensitivity of traditional poetics with the sensibility of the modern technorati.

Among the unpublished masterpieces to be considered are:Ode to the Medium of a Grecian Urn(In which I contemplate the relationship between the figures on the outside of the urn with the ground grain on the inside.

This figure/ground dichotomy leads me to conclude that, to the ancient Greek, the content of the urn was of more importance than the urn itself.

In fact, all Grecian urns have been shown using x-ray technology to have the words "su ejpaggeliva autou" underneath the erotic or Homeric or homoerotic etchings, which translates roughly as "your ad here.")Beauty is truth, truth beauty — Burma Shave.Lacan and the SwanA sudden blow: the great wings beating still, and all of western literature lies helpless at his feet.IM to His Coy MistressHd we bt wrld enuff, & IM,This cynss, ldy, wre n crm.The Vast WastelandMay Sweeps are the cruelest month, breeding Idol ...

Blogging the "Wisconsin" Blummit 2007: part two (blogging news)

...What the panel failed to address is that the issue is more than access depending on race or gender - it is blatantly socioeconomic.

According to the most recent PEW/Internet report, "Thirty-two percent of American adults, or about 65 million people, do not go online, and it is not always by choice." Sixty-five million people!

One-third of our population!

That number is nothing to sniff at when one is talking about democratic participation.

Sure, a grant can fill any U.S.

school with computers that have internet access, completely skewing those numbers, but that isn't the same as children and even adults having ready access to the community dialogue of the Internet.

There is a big difference between a student with a desktop at home and one that may only have internet access in school for one hour a week as part of a class.

Madison is a great example.

Take a look at blogs in town or at The Daily Page forums and you will often find intelligent and thoughtful discussions about the problems on the South Side of town.

That region is Madison's high crime zone and also where our most economically challenged citizens reside.

However, the individuals you never read taking part in those discussions are those that live on that side of town.

A mother with two jobs and two kids isn't going to have time to wa...

Jealousy Is An Ugly, Ugly Thing (blogging news)

... There was a small group of national bloggers, and no North Dakota bloggers.

No serious ones, anyway.

So when I developed an audience I laid claim to the title of “most popular,” mostly as a joke.

It was true, technically, but when your competition is mostly teenagers with MySpace pages it isn’t much to be proud of.

But whatever.

Now I lay claim to the title just because it irks Nodland so.

And that makes me feel warm and happy inside. As for the WSI thing, you haven’t heard the last of this yet.

Whatever else people will tell you about what’s going on at WSI, remember this: From 2004 to 2006 the budget for investigating worker fraud went from $1.6 million down to $150,000.

This state is spending 1/10th of what it was on investigating worker fraud, yet the number of fraudulent workers out there hasn’t decreased by that much.

They’re just not being investigated any more, which means that eventually the bureau will be paying out millions in benefits it shouldn’t have to pay, and that expense will be passed on to every business in the state in the form of higher premiums.

Something that will, in turn, make the price of our goods and services a little bit more expensive. And who has a vested interest in seeing that happen?

Why, unions and work comp.

lawyers of course.

Lawyers like Chad Nodland.
